Technical Theatre Symposium 2020

Join us for our 6th Annual Technical Theatre Symposium where we bring together our Scottish Further and Higher Education Network Institutions and Scottish theatre industry professionals to discuss a range of technical theatre and design topics, including skills training and career pathways. This year, we are delighted to be working in partnership with the Traverse Theatre and sponsored by the Federation of Scottish Theatre.

The morning includes a complimentary breakfast and a choice of five optional Professional Development Workshops, each running twice, in two morning sessions (09:30-11:00 and 11:30-13:00). For those attending the morning workshops there will be a light lunch available.

There will be Industry Trade Stalls accessible (13:00-16:00) in the Traverse Café. Guests confirmed are:

The afternoon session will open officially with a Sector Update / Spotlight Presentations in Traverse 1 (13:45-14:30) from Vanishing Point Theatre Company, Association of British Theatre Technicians, MKeco Design, Creative Edinburgh and Equity. This will be followed by another chance to visit Trade Stalls, have a tour of the building or attend one of our Meet The Designer Surgeries:

    • Set Design with Becki Minto
    • Sound Design with Michael John McCarthy
    • Eco Design with Mona Kastell

Sign up for Meet The Designer surgeries will be at Registration, on the day.

The day will be rounded off with a networking reception (16:00-17:00)

Delegates can register for the full day (Workshops and Symposium) or the afternoon (Symposium only). Please note the morning session has limited capacity and Network lecturers will be given priority booking until Monday 6th January 2019.

Workshop Information

Lighting Workshop with Renny Robertson, chief electrician at the Traverse Theatre

A practical workshop covering small to medium scale lighting, festival rigs and programming in Traverse 2.

Sound Workshop with Clare Hibberd from Sound Girls and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland 

A practical workshop to break down the fear factor of teaching sound. Covering basic understanding of sound as well as some of the techniques that students will be expected to have knowledge of if they are wishing to continue their studies in Higher Education. Held in Traverse 1.

 Set Model Making with set and costume designer Hazel Blue

A practical workshop covering the use of ground plans and creating your own small to medium scale model box with furniture in Traverse Cafe.

This workshop is sponsored by Federation of Scottish Theatre.

SFX Makeup & Wigs with artist Kirsten McCubbin

A practical workshop demonstrating the application of special effects wounds, with a chance to try it out on each other. Also, covering wig prep for men and women and an in depth overview of products involved. Delegates will be given a booklet to take away with information on all the techniques learned. Held in Traverse Dressing Room.

Making It Safe Workshop with Robin Townley, CEO of Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT)

A practical Health and Safety workshop covering risk assessment, method statement writing and how to ensure everyone’s safety. Held in Traverse Theatre Workshop.
