Careers in Theatre Ayrshire

Discover a Career in Technical Theatre and Production Design

The Scottish Drama Training Network has partnered with the Ayr Gaiety Theatre to offer a unique careers day for S1 – S4 pupils from schools in the Ayrshire area. We are inviting pupils from schools in Ayrshire to come together on Tuesday 22 May 2018 to take part in a day of interactive workshops at the Ayr Gaiety Theatre. Each workshop will be led by a specialist and will reveal the variety of career pathways available in technical theatre:

Makeup Artistry and Special Effects

This workshop will be delivered by Michelle Lyons who is trained in theatrical and media
makeup artistry, postiche and wig making. It will provide an overview of the skills required of a theatrical hair and makeup artist who works on theatre, film and television. There will be a demonstration of products used to create special effects makeup and an opportunity for participants to have a hands on experience applying these products to create stage effects.

Learn about Set Construction from Zander Lee, Lecturer from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland during lunch.

Set Design and Construction

Join freelance production designer Hazel Blue to learn about Set Design and Construction. Find out how a set designer plans their ideas with a creative team and how this becomes a final realised set on the stage. Participants will have an opportunity to create their own scale model chair.

Lighting Design

The workshop will be led by Trent Kim, Lecturer in Technical Theatre from the University of the West of Scotland and will begin with a short introduction to theatre lighting design: basics, process and the designer’s role, followed by a hands-on scene design exercise with light. In the exercise, participants will be split into groups and each group will choose their inspiration from a painting, photograph or film and design a scene on stage by using lights, hazer and other materials. There will be a sharing at the end of the workshop.
