Careers in Theatre – Scotland
This year, the Scottish Drama Training Network is partnering with theatres across Scotland to create Careers in Theatre events for senior phase school pupils. Recently we hosted two events in Glasgow and Edinburgh to inform pupils about the varied and exciting career pathways available in theatre and the creative industries.
Our Glasgow event was held on 11 October 2017 and we worked with the Tron Theatre, Citizens Theatre and the Tramway to offer pupils three different workshops, each shining a light on a career pathway in the theatre industry. Pupils took part in practical workshop sessions in Sound Design with freelancer Gary Cameron, Marketing with Shiona Walker, the Digital Officer at the Citizens Theatre and Re-imagining Stage Design with visual artist Rachel O’Neill. Pupils left the event feeling more confident in their knowledge about theatre, one participant said:
“I just never thought there were so many things to do for a production.”
At our Edinburgh event on Monday 13 November, pupils visited the King’s Theatre, Traverse Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Workshops. They were treated to an exclusive day behind the scenes at the theatres and workshops. They tried their hand at Costume Design at the King’s Theatre, learned how to transform Theatre Spaces at the Traverse and explored the vast costume stores and learnt about set design and construction at the Lyceum Workshops. Participants felt inspired by their experiences, commenting:
“I am now interested again in set design and costume design.”
“I thought theatre was all acting and singing, however after today I learnt that there is a lot more to it!”
Overall 97% of participants said they ‘now understood a lot more about theatre than they did before’ and 77% asked SDTN to provide more workshops, covering a wide range of theatre making skills. SDTN are also working with Dundee Rep Theatre and the Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling as part of this Careers in Theatre initiative.
This project has been made possible thanks to SDTN’s ongoing partnership with the Federation of Scottish Theatre. As part of our Future Proofing project, funded by Creative Scotland we are committed to broadening the horizons of students interested in drama and we aim to provide relevant and up-to-date information on the many different career pathways in theatre available to young people today.
