New accredited Summer Festival Learning Programme at Scottish Youth Theatre
The Performance and Production Learning Programme offers participants the opportunity to gain a practical award in theatre and performance. Pitched at Level 7, the course sits between a Higher and Advanced Higher qualification and is worth 29 SCQF credit points. The course is open to people aged 16-25.
This intensive six and a half week learning programme, unique to Scottish Youth Theatre, will offer participants the chance to learn about and build upon the skills needed in the live performer, and ultimately gain them a practical qualification in performance. The level 7 award is comprised of four mandatory units which will be delivered through a series of designated specialist skills workshops, rehearsals and performances with a professional theatre team.
Minister for Learning Dr Alasdair Allan said: “The enthusiasm of groups like the Scottish Youth Theatre and their role in getting young people interested in the dramatic arts is well documented. However, such enthusiasm can now be transformed into a tangible qualification, ensuring that an interest in theatre can be maintained, while still learning new skills and being rewarded for them. This will ultimately improve the employability of the young people who take the course and the SYT should be congratulated for their forward thinking, including getting SCQF and SQA approval.”
This year, the theme for Summer Festival is Twisted Shakespeare and will feature the works of the world’s best-loved playwright reworked in new and unusual ways. The main house productions will be Twelfth Night at the Tron Theatre Glasgow, Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and a new devised production in the Brian Cox Studio at Scottish Youth Theatre Glasgow.
Dates: 2 July – 11 Aug
