Technical Theatre Placement Opportunities with Imaginate

The Scottish Drama Training Network and Imaginate are offering three Technical Theatre placement opportunities as part of the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival 2017.

Placement 1

Monday 22nd – Monday 29th May 2017
Opening Weekend
National Museum of Scotland

The opening weekend is a mini Festival in itself with up to 15 companies/events taking place throughout the museum. Some of these will be on a one to one basis, others are roving and some are durational pieces. Some companies or individuals are participating on both Saturday and Sunday, others on only one of these days.

Set up at the museum has to take place before the building opens to the public or after it closes – 10:00 – 17:00 – so being available from 08.00 is preferable in order to take up this opportunity.

The opening weekend will be of interest to a student with more stage management skills than technical skills. A person who can support our opening weekend producer, Hannah, and can think on their feet to support those taking part in the event.

This opportunity will allow a student to become familiar with the opening weekend programme and involved in the arrangements in the final run up to the weekend event. We would require this student to be available to help set up, support and run the live event.

Weekend, morning and evening work will be required although an individual schedule will be arranged to suit this placement.

Placement 2

Sunday 28th May – Sunday 4th June 2017
Traverse Theatre

For the Festival, Imaginate will be presenting a total of five mostly international performances in both Traverse One (the main house) and Traverse two (the studio space), some dance and some drama.

This is an opportunity for a technical student who is interested in lighting, sound and AV the opportunity to work alongside professional Imaginate and Traverse staff and be part of a unique Festival environment, working on the set up, maintenance and get out of the five shows in both venues for the duration of the Festival.

Weekend, morning and evening work will be required although an individual schedule will be arranged to suit this placement.

Placement 3

Sunday 28th May – Sunday 4th June
All festival venues

The Edinburgh International Children’s Festival will take place in 13 different venues ranging from familiar main house theatres to less traditional church halls and community centres.

Each of these venues has to be prepared for EICF performances, discussions and/or talks. Some of these venues will have to be created from scratch which will involve installing the infrastructure, lighting, projection and sound for a theatre show or for presenting scratch (work in progress) performances for a single or few days and then dismantling the same.

This opportunity is for a student technician or stage manager to be involved in this area of the Festival, to be part of the team that will parachute in to a traditional venue when additional help is required for a get in, get out and set up but also to work on the ‘from scratch’ set up of other less traditional spaces.

This is an exciting opportunity to get a ‘from the ground up’ experience of theatre and event processes, from a technical but also from an organisational point of view.

Weekend, morning and evening work will be required although an individual schedule will be arranged to suit this placement.

Travel subsidies will be available.

If you are interested in applying for one of the positions, please email Abigail McMillan, SDTN’s Technical Theatre Skills Officer abigail@sdtn.org with your name, contact details and chosen placement option by Friday 21 April 12pm.
